HEMP BEVERAGES

The U.S. hemp beverage market has transformed from a $400,000 micro-niche in 2020 into a massive industry generating hundreds of millions of dollars.

This rapid growth is driven by health-conscious consumers shifting away from alcohol, though the market now faces serious regulatory hurdles that could impact its future.

Hemp Beverage Industry Drivers

  • Sober-Curious Demand: Millennials and older demographics, such as parents, increasingly use hemp-derived THC drinks to relax without the hangovers or calories of alcohol.
  • Widespread Retail Access: Hemp drinks bypass strict marijuana laws, appearing openly in mainstream grocery stores, gas stations, liquor retailers, and major MLB and NBA arenas.
  • Alcohol Producer Adoption: Facing declining alcohol sales, major breweries and wineries are entering the hemp space due to its faster production cycles and higher profit margins.

Hemp beverages under 0.3% THC are legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, but the federal rules and regulations are in flux..

Though the hemp beverage industry faces regulatory hurdles that could impact its future, many states have adopted or in the process of adopting and implementation regulatory programs akin to the alcohol industry to permit the responsible manufacturing, distribution, marketing and sale of hemp beverages.

Between FDA inaction and conflicting state laws, the risks are real.
